I can't comment on how our feathered birds are reacting apart from being
sioent, but the quiet here in Brisbane indicates that our metal birds may be
grounded.  

For those of you not in the dust-affected area, at noon today visibility was
down to about half a km.  Dust must be thinning a bit now: at 3 PM I can see
the nearer part of Balmoral Heights from my Hawthorne residence - probably
all of a km and a half!
