Sure. It's like night mode on my video camera - it actually uses an LED on the
camera as a tiny spotlight, and the results are monochrome (but it's range is
extremely short). What I was thinking was more about finding things and
perhaps observing their behaviour but certainly for accurate identification a
photo with white light would be necessary. At least the amount of bright white
light used could be minimised.
The other technology which could be used to find animals at night would be star
scopes. The images they produce are also monochrome but nothing more than
existing starlight or moonlight is required. I've seen cheap ones advertised
for as little as $350.
