I'd be looking to claim New Guinea before Tasmania. New Guinea has our [continent's] high mountains and lots of interesting birds [possibly some yet to be discovered].

I understand that the Cape York Peninsula and the New Guinea mainland were connected as recently as 10,000 years ago. Tasmania was last connected to the Australian mainland about 13,000 years ago. Therefore, if Tasmanian species are included in the Australian bird list, then perhaps so should PNG
species, from a geological and evolutionary perspective.

No. Tasmania was (land) connected to mainland Australia relatively
