I have recently come across a website that has a huge number of old
ornithological publications on it. It's called the Biodiversity Heritage
library - www.biodiversitylibrary.org You can browse by page, download pdfs of
particular pages, or download entire books for free. Most of the publications
are old ones, but many classics of ornithological literature are there in full,
and are at least partly text searchable. To give a few examples of the books
and other publications you can read, here are some that I found after a short
look:
a.. the Peters world checklist - all 16 volumes
b.. the catalogue of the bird collection of the British Museum - all 27
volumes
  c.. Newton's Dictionary of Birds
d.. North's Nests and Eggs of Australian Birds
e.. Campbell's Nests and Eggs of Australian Birds
f.. Gould's Handbook of Australian Birds
g.. Buller's Manual of NZ Birds
  h.. Littler's Birds of Tasmania
i.. selected volumes of journals including The Emu, The Ibis, Annals and
Magazine of Natural History, the South Australian Ornithologist and various
American museum publications
For anyone doing bird research that requires them to go back through the
literature it will be incredibly useful. And publications seem to be getting
added all the time.
