Hi David,
The top gull books currently are:
Gulls of Europe, Asia & North America by Klaus Malling Olsen & Hans
Larsson.
2004. (it has to be the second (corrected) edition)
Gulls of the Americas by Steve Howell
and Jon Dunn. 2007. A detailed reference to
all 36 gull species of North and South America, with 528 pages and
1,160 colour
photographs.
The top tern book is:
Terns: an identification guide by
Klaus Malling Olsen & Hans Larsson. 1995.(it covers only the Northern
hemisphere)
Hayman et al. is very nice (especially since it covers the whole
world, but still not all shorebirds - e.g. Plains Wanderer and
Buttonquails are not included), but should nowadays be supplemented by
e.g.
The Shorebird Guide by Michael O’Brien, Richard Crossley and Kevin
Karlson. 2006. The superb, new,
comprehensive photographic identification guide to North American waders
(including vagrants), with 492 pages and c.900 high quality colour
photographs. (in this book Plains Wanderer and Buttonquails are not
included for other reasons ;-)
Cheers,
Nikolas

Subject: RFI - Gulls & Terns book
Hi all
I was wondering if there is a field guide reference book for Gulls &
Terns similar to the soft cover Onley & Schofield "Albatrosses,
Petrels & Shearwaters"?
Also how does "Shorebirds ,an Identification Guide" by Hayman,
Marchant and Prater compare with the recent Aussie shorebird book?
Sorry can't remember the name of that one either!
Cheers
