Dear All,
I have discovered why the villains of the piece in the story about
"Condors" taking Deer in a reserve in China were called "Condors".
After reading a piece about "Condors" being a proscribed food for the
Hui people, an Islamic minority ethnic group from an autonomous
region, SW of Beijing, I contacted Simba Chan, from BirdeLife Asia.
Simba, very kindly, got back to me and said that in Mandarin, the
English words Vulture and Condor both translate to "bald eagle" (tujiu
or wujiu). It would seem that the journo in the Xinhua agency who
wrote the original piece did not have the greatest Mandarin-English
dictioary.
I wonder if this means that the national bird of the USA is refered to
in China as a Vulture?
Cheers,
Carl Clifford
