Dear all,

If anyone is thinking of going to Tioman, I have a copy of Lord Medway's paper I can send. It is a 1.1 MB pdf, so if you are still on dial-up, I can print and post.

It is still the best resource on the avifauna of Tioman, despite being 43 years old.

Cheers,

Carl Clifford

Hi Mike,

Pulau Tioman is a well known roost site for Christmas Frigatebird - mentioned in Lord Medway's paper on the birds of the island in the Bulletin of the Raffles Museum as long ago as the early
1960s.

Regards,

Ian.

Quoting Carl Clifford <>:

Sorry Mike, it is just a roost for both species, or at least I have

not read of any breeding there, and I have not been out to the islet

(Pulau Rengis) to check. Wells does not mention any breeding
population in M'sia for either species in "Birds of the Thai-Malay
Peninsula".

It is very pleasant sitting in the grounds of the Berjaya Resort
coming up to sunset, with a bevvie in one hand and binos in the other

and watch them wheeling in from over the S. China Sea in their
hundreds to roost.

Steve,
If you would like a nice after conference break on a tropical
island, I would suggest Tioman, off the East coast of Malaysia.
You
can get there from S'pore easily by air or sea. The birding there

is not bad, with the majority of the island coverd with rainforest

and there is an island just off shore with a colony of Christmas

and Great Frigatebirds.

Do you mean a BREEDING colony of Christmas Frigatebirds (or just a
roost site)?

Great news if true because I thought this was a Christmas Island
endemic and good if there was another breeding population from a
conservation viewpoint.
