Swallows frequenting old nests

When I spent lots of time at the Eyre Bird Observatory in the 1980s a colony
of Welcome Swallows sheltered from the winds by day by resting on the
rafters above the verandah or inside the roof and would also roost there at
night. Numbers of Welcome Swallows using the area above the verandah varied
seasonally, but there were always some there throughout the year. The same
individuals would nest there during the breeding season. Near dusk there was
quite a lot of jostling for the best roosting spot and there was definitely
competition for best nest site locations during the breeding season. There
was a definite need to find a relatively safe nesting spot because a pair of
Grey Butcherbirds nested in a tree a few hundred metres away and regularly
raided the contents of the less protected swallow nests.

Stephen
