Hi all
after the Sydney pelagic on 14 Feb was cancelled, I popped out briefly this
morning to Long Reef (Sydney's Northern beaches) for a quick sea watch
(6:45-8am) to get seabird fix in while the conditions appear to be quiet
good. The tide was out so I got to the end of the rock platform and found
an almost sheltered spot. The birds were often quite close in, so the
'scope was not often necessary. Best birds were:
- 1 Bullers Shearwater - about 100 metres of the platform, so good views.
- 2 Sooty Shearwater
- 1 Fluttering Shearwater in close (lots further out)
- 1 Arctic, 1 possible Long Tailed Jaeger
- plenty of Pomarine Jaegers
- immature Osprey over the rock shelf - I assume a young bird from the
Narrabeen Lakes nest?
Also, lots of Wedge Tailed and Short Tailed Shearwater and good number of
Gannets. Most birds working their way southwards into the wind
Also on the rock platform plenty of Red Necked Stint starting to colour up,
a couple of Turnstones, 2 Sooty Oystercatcher, 4 Golden Plover and a few
Grey Tailed Tattlers, plus the usual selection of cormorants and terns
Cheers
Tom Wilson
