While on the subject of World Checklists, i can recommend this World
Checklist from the IOC, which adopts a much more progressive line than
the Clements Checklist ,which is still way out-of-date for all Old
World and Australian species and has a new and very contentious,
conservative line on New World species. They seem to be trying to
align all the major American checklists (AOU and SACC), with many
lumps of species as a consequence.
The IOC one is in Excel, so you can change it as you see fit, and it's
updated very regularly, with version 1.8 due shortly. It follows the
IOC Recommended English names of birds as per the book by Frank Gill
and Minturn Wright.
I should point out that they are quite receptive to changes, many of
the newly coined names are trial versions, so it is by no means set in
stone yet cf. previous threads on vernacular names, another bone of
contention with Clements which imposed many novelties on us.
The IOC one can be found as listed below, with good background data
about the names project of which this is a spin-off.
Hope it may prove of interest
the website http://www.worldbirdnames.org has the latest version
They're working up version 1.8 (or maybe jump to 2.0) to be released
in January. Will upgrade family classifications and genera.
