Steve Clark asked whether there are any Cattle Egret breeding records from
Victoria other than the breeding events at Balyang Sanctuary, Geelong during
the past 2 years. The 'Atlas of Victorian Birds' (Emison et al. 1988) mentions
2 breeding events on Gunbower island, Murray River, but gives no further
details. HANZAB mentions them too but does not elaborate. Given the state of
the Murray-Darling system, the chances of further breeding events along the
Murray would seem to be slim indeed, so the Balyang Sanctuary colony would
appear to be a significant extension of breeding range - what are the
southernmost NSW colonies, Newcastle area?

By the way Steve, re your posting on White-browed Scrubwrens in the Parliament
Gardens - you need to come to Head Office more often. WbSw are found in many
city gardens including the Fitzroy Gardens and the box hedges in the garden of
St Patricks Cathedral. I have seen them dodging trams and cars to cross busy
Gisborne St between the Parliament Gardens and St Patricks Cathedral, a
distance of perhaps 40 m of asphalt and concrete.
