Tones,
I use the 60CS and a mate of mine uses the 60CSx. There is little difference
between the two other than the fact that the CSx accepts an SD card.
One beauty of the Garmin devices is that you can load the free Shonkymaps on
them. This is a brilliant map set for Australia and shows detail down to 4WD
tracks and even some walking tracks. The CS and CSx will let you track your
position, set waypoints, they'll even act as SatNav devices with the right
(and expensive) maps loaded. The SD card on the CSx will allow you to store
more maps than the CS - for example, with a 2Gb SD card, you'd easily fit
the maps for Australia, New Zealand, South-east Asia and probably the entire
world. The CS (without the SD card) has much more limited capacity - I can
generally only fit maps for one Australian state. It is important to note
that both devices store the tracks on the unit itself, resulting in limited
capacity. I can only get two or three days worth of tracks on the CS -
presumably the same for the CSx. This means that for extended trips, I have
to have some way of downloading the tracks - a laptop, in other words.
One negative - the digital compass on the units is rubbish. Don't even
bother with it. Everything else about them is a resounding thumbs-up.

Ok, which of you genii knows anything much about the above unit which I
can get w/o the SD card ( I don't need Singapore/Malaysia etc) for $499.
I'm aware of the specs for the unit but I'm looking for experiential
input.
Thanks in advance.
Tony.
