Hi all
Is there any suitable habitat for a Koel at the Truganina Parklands ?
From Google the area looks like swamp, tidal creek and coastal scrub with
some reveg. projects (plus gum/wattle woodland further east). A revegetation
priority is grassland/flowers for the threatened Altona Skipper butterfly
(now restricted to eastern Port Phillip Bay?).
For the City of Bayside (also on the Bay) there are records of Koels staying
for a week or more at 4 sites (in 7 summers from 1986 to 2006). Sometimes
birds have stayed for months with two sites used for 2/3 summers in
succession.
At three sites (haven't checked the fourth) there are mature Moreton Bay Fig
trees. Figs are a favourite (preferred?) food of Koels although they will
survive on melon, Kiwi fruit...
Can't think what Koels would eat at Truganina Park other than perhaps
Kangaroo Apple berries.
Cheers
