Hello birding-aus members,

I just wish to pass on the sad news that Merle Baldwin of Schwenkes Lane,
Gilgai, NSW, has just passed away in Inverell. Merle was the author of
amongst others an oft-cited paper entitled, "The birds of Inverell district,
N.S.W.", which appeared in The Emu in 1975. She was well into her nineties
and had spent the last couple of years in an aged-care facility in Inverell
due to injuries suffered after a fall at her home in Gilgai. I am sure that
the likes of Stephen Debus, Hugh Ford, David Geering, a generation of
research students at the University of New England, Armidale and the older
NSW birding fraternity, would be aware of that valuable paper and Merle's
contribution to ornithology and conservation.

All the best,

Charles Silveira

Melbourne
