Journalists have such a profound ability to produce the most over the top
statements and anecdotal facts, like the following I found in that article:
"But this would be the first known loss of a mammal and the most significant
since the extinction of the Dodo and the Tasmanian Tiger."
If the journalist who wrote that article did even the smallest amount of
research he would realize that Dodo's weren't mammals and that the
extinction of the Dodo preceded that of the Tasmanian Tiger by almost 270
years.
Within that time period, hundreds of significant species of mammals (and
birds) went extinct, including a couple of dozen within Australia like the
Toolache, Crescent Nail-tailed Wallaby, Pig-footed Bandicoot, Lesser Bilby,
Paradise Parrot, Norfolk Island Kaka and Grey-headed Blackbird to name a
few.

"SCIENTISTS say a white possum native to Queensland's Daintree forest has
become the first mammal to become extinct due to man-made global warming.

Prior to 2005 we were seeing a lemuroid every 45 minutes of spotlighting
at one main site at Mt Lewis," Professor Williams said.

But, in three years, in more than 20 hours of intensive spotlighting,
 none has been sighted.
