You might be right. Most of the Figbirds in the Newcastle region are
associated with urban areas, especially where fig trees are planted. I
never see them in the Barrington Tops or Watagan areas, but maybe others
have records of this.

Anthropogenic climate change isn't the only game in town when it comes
to
Australian natural environments in the last century or so! How about
anthropogenic habitat loss and modification??!! Remember that 'pre
climate
change' hot issue?
It's not beyond the realms of possibility that the southward charge of
the
frugivores is being ably assisted by (i) landscape scale gross
modification
of the vegetation matrix, (ii) proliferation of feral fruiting plants in
town and countryside, and/or (iii) mass garden plantings of fruiting
plant
species; all or some of these changes over many many decades.
Increasing average global temperatures may or may not have anything to
do
with it ....
PS: It is interesting to hear that Figbirds are nesting in far eastern
Victoria - thanks Mike - it'll be fascinating to see how quickly and how
far
west they come over the next few years! What odds that Figbirds will
reach
and colonise Melbourne in the next decade or so - keeping the Koels and
White-headed Pigeons company ...
