Hi Ross et al,

It's always interesting to see what species people need on a trip like this.
FYI I've given you details about most of the birds you want - and there are
more descriptive details on my report site at http://tim-dolby.blogspot.com/
(i.e. click on Alice Springs). Here's a rundown:

* Australian Dotterel - unlikely unless you're lucky. Look in the gravel beside
hwy's near Erldunda and then down into SA etc.

* Bourkes Parrot - Kunoth Bore. Wait until dusk (i.e. just as it's getting
dark). Also in the mulga areas nearby during the day.

* Spinifex Pigeon - the Pound Walk, Ormiston Gorge (West McDonnells), carpark
Ormiston Gorge.

* Black-eared Cuckoo - a chance at Kunoth Bore mulga area.

* Spinifexbird - the turnoff to Ormiston Gorge (West McDonnells) - see web
page. Also Ellery Creek Nature Park, Rufous-Crowned Emu-Wren - turnoff to
Ormiston Gorge/Pound (West McDonnells). Also 32 km south of Alice Springs
airport on Santa Teresa Rd (i.e. in the small valley of spinifex (where the
spinifex meets both sides of the road - 200m past the tyre wedged in the
telegraph). Dusky GW are on the top of the rocky escarpment another 500m north.

* Dusky Grasswren - the Pound Walk, Ormiston Gorge, also 32 km south of Alice
Springs airport on Santa Teresa Rd - see above.

* Striated Grasswren - at Uluru in unburnt Spinifex near car (and bus) carpar
(sunset site) - although few reports recently. I've got sites in Victoria and
SA (i.e. Gluepot), which are far more reliable.

* Redthroat - you could try Kunoth Bore, Kings Canyon, also 5 kms W of
Simpson's Gap at 23 39 48S 133 40 16E. Quite common in the Flinders Ranges -
and I haver a good site in sunny Victoria.

* Chiming Wedgebill - quite common at Erldunda, 21km north of service station.

* Slaty-backed Thornbill - Kunoth Bore mulga area.

* Banded Whiteface - Erldunda, 21km north of service station. Tricky to get
unless you use call back - it's up to you.

* Grey Honeyeater - occassionally Olive Pink Botanic Gardens and regularly
reported at Kunoth Bore mulga area. You could give Olive Pink a call to find
out if it's there.
Contact (08) 8952 2154, e-mail Also Serpentine Gorge. Last
report 16/08/2008.

* Orange Chat - Erldunda, Newhaven, Kunoth Well.

* Cimmamon Quail-thrush - reputably at Erldunda, alhtough I ddin't see them
there. Also Hale River area(24 26 19S 135 52 54E) and near Rodinga Range on the
Santa Teresa Road (i.e. 100 km past Santa Terasa).

* Chestnut Quail-thrush - closest area to Alice is in South Australia ie.
Currie Creekk (26 46S 131 48E). Mod common at Gluepot (SA) and Bronzewing
Reserve in Vic.

* Western Bowerbird - Olive Pink Botanic Gardens, also Simpsons Gap and
Ormiston Gorge Pound Walk.

South Australia

* Churriping Wedgebill - started to appear around Oodnadatta Tk and Marree Rd.
Common Flinders Ranges, Port Augusta, off the Kingoonya road (32°20'S 137°40'E).
and in open scrub around Broken Hill.

* Shy Heathwren - closest Gluepot Reserve or in NSW Mount Hope and Yathong
Nature Reserve

* Rufous Fieldwren - Mt Lyndhurst Station Strzelecki Track. Port Augusta, off
the Kingoonya Rd (32°20'S 137°40'E).

* Purple-gaped Honeyeater - not in your range.

* Scarlet-chested Parrot - best bet Gluepot if you're lucky.

Good luck and interested to hear how you go.

Hi again,

Well, this is my thrid (and hopefully) last request for info. After Darwin I
plan on driving down to the Alice Springs area. The main reason for this part
is just to see Ayers Rock, but of course there are some birds I want to pick up
too. Once again, i've gotten a decent amount of infomoration from the archeives
and websites already, but I just wanted some updated info. Has the Alice
Springs area gotten much rain recently? It seems like all the reports from
earlier this year talk about how dry it was. Also, how is birding this area
during the summer? There doesn't seem to be much info on it. Any updated info
on the follow species would be helpful:

Hopefully i'll be in Alice Springs Jan 10-13 and then the drive back through SA
from 14-17.

Australian Dotterel- not as much around the Alice Springs area, but is there
anywhere I could find this species?
Spinifex Pigeon
Bourkes Parrot
Black-eared Cuckoo
Spinifexbird
RC Emu-Wren
Dusky Grasswren
Striated Grasswren
Redthroat
Chiming Wedgebill
SB Thornbill
Banded Whiteface
Grey Honeyeater
Ornage Chat
Cimmamon Quail Thrush
Chestnut Quail Thrush
Western Bowerbird.

Also, I think I am going to head back towards the Gold Coast via South
Australia. (Colber's Pedy, Port Augusta, Broken Hill). I will mainly just be
driving straight through, but are there any good birding spots that are close
to this route that would be good to stop at? Truthfully I haven't even looked
into what all is a possibility along this route. Maybe a good spot for ducks?
Or species like Scarlet-chested Parrot, Churriping Wedgebill, Shy Heathwren,
Rufous Fieldwren, or Purple-gaped Honeyeater?

Once again thanks for any help people can give me, Ross Gallardy Robina, QLD
