In reply to Peter's question - the Painted Snipe was still there yesterday evening at sunset, affording excellent views as it wandered around feeding on the mud. There was an Australian Spotted Crake out in the open as well. For non-Melburnians, Edithvale is 30km south of Melbourne. The hide is at Melway 93 D8. It is only open at weekends, but there is a view over the wetlands from a platform in the adjacent car park, from which we saw the birds yesterday.
