Arwen,

As a long time Wires carer my usual tactic with a bird in the house is, open windows if possible, if not, close blinds or curtains and leave one well lit opening. Don't chase the bird, let it find its own way out. This works if you have plenty of time, if not try and throw a towel over the bird and gently pick it up and take it outside. If it is a small bird and there are predators about do not let it go immediately. Let it recover in a box and then release it when it has recovered from the shock. If all else fails ring Wires or similar organisation.

Cheers,
Jill
