Kurtis,
I take it that your mention of " the relatively recent sighting of the
one which made its home at the start of the walking track in
Warriewood wetlands" would be the one many of us went to see there on
Feb 2006, but I saw one there only a couple of weeks back,
thanks to Nikolas Haass et al who found it when I was there on Sep 21
- on which day he reported it on birding Aus with his other sightings
of interest.

Tim,
As you were saying, there is some suitable habitat near the area
where you
saw the Button Quail. Sheldon forest-Rofe park being the most
substantial, I
used to do quite a lot of birding in this area as it was my 'local
patch'
for some time but I never once saw any quail species.
This bushland adjoins Avondale Golf Course where Ern Hoskin observed 4
Southern Whitefaces in 1951 (from CBOC newsletter March-April 1997).
Painted Button Quail have a habit of turning up almost anywhere, I
remember
having one brought to me after it was caught in the grounds of a
suburban
church in Seven Hills back in 1996.
There was also the relatively recent sighting of the one which made
its home
at the start of the walking track in Warriewood wetlands.
They are a beautiful bird and always nice to see.

Subject: [Birding-Aus] Unusual Buttonquail Sighting
Seen yesterday about 8.15 a.m. (spotted by my 17 year old son ffrom
the car)
- a female Painted Buttonquail in Lonsdale Avenue, Pymble (Upper
North Shore
Sydney) on the grass verge, looking very confused. Eventually and
inevitably
mobbed by Noisy Miners, it wandered under our stationary car and
made its
way into a flowerbed, still pursued by the miners.
Don't know if some of this species make seasonable movements, but
that would
seem the most logical explanation for such an unusual location,
although not
all that far from some fairly sizeable national parkland.
Cheers
Tim
