Dave,
Alistair McKeogh pointed out in his later posting, that Facebook only claims the right to use your details etc.. while they are posted. That still gives them the right to use them for the period they are on site. You would have to read the whole of the terms and conditions to accurately determine what Facebook's rights are over you are. Sites such as Facebook do sell your details (minus name, supposedly) to data miners, as do many organisations. There is apparently a bit of a sub- culture out there who have made a hobby out of putting up "ghosts" on social network sites with some pretty strange details to try and skew demographics generated by the data miners. I must confess that I am guilty of being a bit inventive when I am accosted by pop-ups asking me to do surveys, though I do have better things to do with my time, than "ghost post'. I would rather be birding.

Cheers,

Carl Clifford

I had not realised that (not that I intend to use the system). Which presumably means that those who have proposed the use of Facebook as a way to allow discussion of photos etc which cannot be done on BirdingAus will now effectively lose any copyright over those photos. Does this apply to sites such as Flickr which I believe (I am not a photographer) are used for photo sharing and MAY be more appropriate than Facebook?

And the sting is in the tail. "to prepare derivative works of, or incorporate into other works, such User Content, and to grant and authorize sublicenses of the foregoing." means that they can sell any of your details and anything you post, to any one, anywhere, without informing you,, and you can do sweet nothing about it. Oh yes, you could take it to court, in the USA. But how much can you afford to spend? You bet Fakebook has deeper pockets.

Cheers,

It's your life. Just make sure you read and understand the terms of service. Anything you post (including all those photos of their kids people like to
put up) belong to the Face Borg.

And if you're not sharing real information, what's the point?

Have fun.

"By posting User Content to any part of the Site, you automatically grant,

Company an irrevocable, perpetual, non-exclusive, transferable, fully paid,

Just a quick congratulations to Kurtis and Russell for the birding groups
on
Facebook. It is lovely to see that both groups are being joined. And for
those who are dubious about Facebook.....you are the master of your own
profile!!

A positive thought on a wee bit gloomy of a day in Newcastle!
