Hi all,
I spent a few days in Perth for business (from 19th – 24th September 2008) so
used the opportunity to spend some time in the South-east of WA.
The areas I spent time in south of Perth and incredibly scenic and rich in bird
life.
The highlight for me was seeing the Noisy Scrub-bird at Two Peoples Bay, albeit
for about 3 seconds as it ran up and across a path. I certainly realised the
frustration of seeing this bird. Getting close to several other NSB's (like
Creek Crossing in Waychinicup NP and "Noisy  Scrub-bird Rock" in Two Peoples
Bay)somtimes within metres, even centimetres without a view! I got some good
recordings of the one at Creek Crossing in Waychinicup NP).
I used various reports from Birding AUS and Frank O’Connor’s website (fantastic
website, thanks Frank). I
The following species were seen:
-          Pacific Gull (Two Peoples Bay, 23rd August)
-          Laughing Turtle-Dove (Burswood, the park opposite the Casino, 20th
August)
-          Common Bronzewing (Kings Park, Perth, 21st August and they were
common along the Albany Highway)

-          Red-capped Parrot (Picnic grounds at Two Peoples Bay and Waychinicup
NP, 23rd August)
-          Western Rosella (on the road-side between Wagin and Arthur River,
23rd August)
-          Australian Ringneck (Kings Park and numerous locations along Albany
Highway, 20th-24th August)
-          Elegant Parrot (Near Gnowangerup on road-side, between Gnowangerup
and Southern Highway, 23rd August)
-          Fan-tailed Cuckoo (1 in Two Peoples Bay and 2 in Waychinicup NP,
23rd August)
-          Striated Pardolote (Kings Park, Perth 20th August)
-          White-browed Scrubwren [Spotted Scrubwren] (Picnic grounds at Two
Peoples Bay, 23rd August)
-          Western Greygone (Burswood, the park opposite the Casino, 20th
August)
-          Inland Thornbill (Picnic grounds at Two Peoples Bay, 23rd August)

-          White-naped Honeyeater (the Creek Crossing at Waychinicup NP, 23rd
August)
-          Brown Honeyeater (Kings Park, Perth 21st August)
-          Western Spinebill (Little Beach “Noisy Scrub-bird Rock”, Two Peoples
Bay, 23rd August)
-          Scarlet Robin (Stirling Ranges NP, Bluff Knoll area, 23rd August)
-          White-breasted Robin (the Creek Crossing at Waychinicup NP, 23rd
August)
-          Grey (Western) Shrike Thrush (Stirling Ranges NP, Bluff Knoll area,
23rd August)
-          Golden Whistler ((Stirling Ranges NP, Bluff Knoll area, 23rd August)
-          Grey Fantail (Waychinicup NP, 23rd August)
-          Black-faced Cuckoo-shrike (Kings Park, 21st August and Two Peoples
Bay 23rd August)
-          Black-faced Woodswallow (Kings Park, Perth 21st August)
-          Dusky Woodswallow (Two Peoples Bay, 23rd August)
-          Noisy Scrub-bird (at 7.30am at Little Beach, Two Peoples Bay, 23rd
August on the Little Beach to Information Centre walk)…..I saw the bird within
15 minutes of arriving. As advised on Frank’s website I waited on the path. Two
birds were calling and one ran out on to the path. Superb location, amazing
sighting!
No luck with Western Bristlebird (followed instructions in the carpark, heard
but not seen). Nor did I see Western Whipbird or Red-eared Firetails. An excuse
to go back this remarkable region of our great country.
Cheers,
Charles Hunter
