In response to Craig's query regarding Masked Owls calling during the day.
I have asked my owl contacts here in Victoria (Ed McNabb and Rohan
Bilney) to offer their thoughts. Rohan (who's mentioned in David Hollands
superb new owl book) provided the following thoughts ...
Rohan has a mainly se Australian perspective on owls I believe.

Hi Martin,
It wouldn't surprise me if it was being mobbed by birds or was disturbed.
Haven't heard Tyto make a noise in the day before thought (except for late
evening, sometimes sooties call before sunset), but have never seen a
masked in a foliage roost before. Powerful owls often call (bleat, or
single woo) if being mobbed by currawongs etc. or you walk too close
during breeding. Quite interesting!

Cheers,
Rohan
