Hi Evan,Although my comments are about the mammals that you reported I think that there are enough birders who are also interested in other species that it may be appropriate to reply on the list. Re. the Wallaroo with the Eastern Grey Kangaroos. Are you sure that the 'Grey Kangaroos' were not female Wallaroos? They are usually (but not always) found in different habitats. Re. Parma Wallaby - after being considered extinct in Australia the Parma Wallaby was rediscovered in the highlands between the Wattagans and the Gibraltar Range, west of Grafton. A skull found near the Queensland border was identified by Barbara Triggs as a Parma Wallaby so they may be in the Border Ranges but apart from the skull they have not been reported north of the Washpool/Gibraltar Range. The Red-legged Pademelon has a longer tail and is less rounded in shape than the Red-necked Pademelon. The Red-necked is by far the more common pademelon species on the NSW North Coast. Young Swamp Wallabies can also look like Parma Wallabies. Re the Rufous Bettong - unless you were in dry forest/ woodland with a native grass understorey you are unlikely to have a Rufous Bettong. Maybe one could occur in the habitat that you describe but they are usually in drier country. The rufous wash on a Rufous Bettong is very hard to see at night in artificial light. The animal generally looks greyish all over. Not a young Red-legged or Red-necked Pademelon? I see, like many people, that you have a problem with the spelling of Bulahdelah!!! Regards Greg Clancy |
