Birds 'caring' for each other

Lovely story Bob.
I have one that is somewhat contrary.
A pair of Sacred Kingfishers over a number of years nested in a tree 
opposite my back door. However one year whilst they were reopening their 
entrance hole in a termites nest the male somehow got stuck in the hole. Two 
days later I saw the female with a new partner digging the male out which 
dropped onto the ground. Not much of a wake. They reared a brood that year 
but there wasn't much of a wake.
