Hi there,
I was reading Evan Beaver?s post on the Black Kite recently (link here:
http://bioacoustics.cse.unsw.edu.au/birding-aus/2008-08/msg00008.html ) and
it prompted me to look into a raptor (pair actually) that I have seen
circling over the Cambridge Gardens area about three times in the last three
years. What I noted at the time that they were rather large, with a wingspan
of about 150cm or five feet, and they were just above the treetops as they
circled, working their way over the southern edge of the ADI site, coming
over the suburb of Cambridge Gardens, where I reside. This is about five km
NE from Lapstone where Evan would have seen his Black Kite.
The linked image is rather poor, but I think there are enough visible
features to make a definite ID at the same time noting the way they circled
so low over the trees, as I believe that is a Square-tailed Kite trait as
they hunt for fledglings. It was captured on the 4th of May 2007 at 11:00am.
(there were two at the time)
