John et al No such decision has been made. It's an option that has been raised as a last resort to prevent the problem of acid sulfate soils from worsening. Other options that are being considered include bio-remediation (eg. mulching and re-establishement of reeds), and liming. The lower lakes are currently at -0.36cm AHD whereas their normal level is +0.75 AHD. Diatom and pollen coring results have shown that in the past they would have been mostly freshwater lakes that were only rarely intruded by seawater at times of extreme drought. Following the establishment of the barrages in 1936 they were effectively disconnected from the marine environment of the Coorong and water levels kept pretty well at least at the level mentioned above.
