Hi Simon and Evan
Alot of this has all probaby been said before by more experienced
people than myself and would be available in the archives but here's
my understanding:
The call seems to be the only thing that 100% separates them. Very
recently Graham Turner made this call available fro everyone.
I think you will find the barred underparts are when in breeding
plumage Evan.
Also it looks like the colour temperature of the image has been
warmed up alot which would account for the yellower than normal legs.
Both have a long straight bill. The nasal groove length is more of a
telling factor although this can vary alot in both I think. Wandering
typically have a longer nasal groove.
The supercilium doesn't seem to extend behind the eye which i was
under the impression was a reasonable disgnostic feature??
I have only seen one Wandering too Simon and your bird looks more
like my Wandering than any Grey-tailed i have seen.
As for the finely streaked face i don't think you can see that level
of detail from this image. Again from my limited encounter the Grey-
tailed face is more streaked than Wandering.

I know Bob Inglis has a great series and experience with these birds
and has provided a link to his images in the recent past. Bob are you
out there??
Simon, search the archives and you'll find it though for sure.

Sorry Simon I don't agree. I've only seen one, and had to check the ID
notes, but it does look different to the one I saw.
1. Solid grey upper parts look right
2. The underparts do not appear 'heavily barred', but that seems to
vary for this species
3. 'Finely streaked face', probably not
4. But, the 'eye line is long and dark'
5. Long straight black bill and white eye ring both right
6. 'Dull yellow legs', not quite, I'd say they're quite bright yellow,
but the Grey's legs are generally quite dull .
The other key ID feature I've found is "wing tips project far beyond
the tail when at rest", which doesn't seem to be the case with this
bird, though it's hard to tell from the pic. Maybe a re-observation in
the field of this characteristic would nail it for you? So I'm not
prepared to commit from this photo, but it's definitely close!
Have a look at this link too.

Hope this was in some way helpful.
