We should remember that the House Sparrows had it very good since the
beginnings of agriculture. With large amounts of stored grain around
the place and lots being spilt, they built up to large popualtion
numbers. Since the decline of horse-drawn transport in the early 1990s
and the beginning of mechanised farming (with more efficient grain
storage), they are retuning to lower levels. It may be, however, that
their numbers will plateau at lower level at some point.
