Dear birders,
As Troy has pointed out, the spit at Penrhyn Estuary is now fenced off to
anyone, thankfully including fishermen (who often sit on the spit with
multiple rods spread along the spit, preventing waders from roosting there,
and dogs which have been a major concern of late). For the time being the
spit will remain isolated and undisturbed (although not much in the way of
waders at the moment - most of the Double-banded Plovers seem to have gone
back to the airport where they used to hang out).
A temporary roosting island is about to be constructed which will be visible
from the car park, and being an island will be less disturbed from dogs,
foxes, and people. At about the same time the mangroves will be cleared,
providing more feeding habitat for waders, ready for the coming spring
migration.
Articles about the Penrhyn Estuary enhancement will be out soon, probably
next week, and I will ensure everyone who might be interested knows when and
where to look (for example the new AWSG website www.awsg.org.au ).

Subject: Penrhyn Estuary, Port Botany, Sydney
Hi all,
I haven't seen any other message about this, but it seems that access to the
sand-spit at Penrhyn has been cut off. All the bush on the dunes has been
removed, and it looks like the docks are being somewhat expanded.
As long as the spit is still there, I guess its good for the birds, but it's
not so good when you're trying to show someone Double-banded Plovers!
Cheers
Troy
