Hi Chris,

I am also a Paddington resident and saw and heard a Boobook calling late last
year in the park in Stephen Street (that is also fronted by Nield and Brown
Streets, opposite Dillon Street where I live).

As you may know there is probably the largest "green" area in Paddington within
the Scottish Hospital where I have also seen a Barn Owl back in 2003.

I will check out Duxford Street this afternoon so thanks for the heads up.

Cheers,
Charles Hunter

A juvenile Southern Boobook arrived in Paddington last year and roosted in
a street near by. Given that Paddo is the one of the most densely populated
parts of Australia a Boobook is quite an event. Anyway it arrived the day
the last Harry Potter book came out which spooked the local school kids
(apparently the book features a magic owl). After roosting every day in the
same tree it disappeared before Christmas but reappeared at the same roost a
couple of months ago - now an adult. It seems content with its roost despite
being only about 4 metres above the street and having to suffer the
enthusiastic local tree climbing kids.

I wasn't going to send this because a) locals asked me not to and b) a
Southern Boobook is probably not a very rare bird but events have changed.
This week Woollahra Council, in its wisdom, has started to remove all the
street trees because their roots are lifting the pavement. I
understand Boobook's tree will be preserved for the time being. Anyway it
might not be there for much longer. So for those who want to see it, it's
in
the tree on the footpath outside 52 Duxford Street. It's not a big tree
(probably a lot smaller soon!) but look for droppings on the sword grass
below and look up towards Mars. It was there a couple of hours ago but no
guarantees.

I hope these directions are precise enough and I am also offering - Tony are
you still out there - a once in a lifetime offer of a FREE guided tour of
the tree, (Disclaimer: Doesn't include travel to and from tree)
