John,

I think that these debates need to be had - not avoided. Clearly there is a
degree of pent up feeling about this subject, and it is surely better to get
that out in the open.

I think that Richard and Inger's excellent responses have opened many
people's eyes to what actually is involved in organising these trips.

I for one don't begrudge the organisers anything. From what I can tell, it
appears that in many cases, the organisers are actually worse off as a
result of organising these trips. Having been on a couple of pelagics, I am
extremely grateful to the people that organised them (and I do not know if
they paid or not, nor do I particularly care).

For the record, I am in your group 2 (although I don't think that it is
quite that straightforward).

So the net result of all this posting is that we have two groups of people

1. Those who won't go on a trip if the organiser gets to go free

2. Those who don;t mind if the organiser goes free so long as he/she
has done a lot of work organising the trip.

Surely it was obvious to begin with that some birding-aus people were
going to fall into group one and others into group two as this is a
matter of opinion, where fact can't obtrude to change minds.

In the future wouldn't it be better to avoid these kind of debates and
stick to ones where people can prove their assertions, or not?

(For the record I am in group 2)
