A few interesting sightings yesterday morning around Douglas Farm Rd,
Kurrajong Hills (c 80 kms nw of Sydney).
Rainbow Lorikeets continue to be present in small numbers as per
previous report in April, this is now 3 months of frequent sightings.
Most were pairs with some groups of 6-8 birds. There were several Little
Lorikeets also present yesterday, max number of 4.
Bird activity is very high at present, after a very dry May of only a
couple of very light showers. Satin Bowerbirds are in good numbers and a
young male was seen at a kind of half-baked bower - I am not sure if the
young males routinely set up a 'practice bower' but it did look like he
was in training for the real thing. Other species which appear more
conspicuous than usual at present include King Parrots, Red-browed
Finches, Olive-backed Orioles, Mistletoebirds, Pied Currawongs (under
constant Bell Miner attack) and Eastern Spinebills. Also seen were
Restless Flycatcher, Golden Whistler, Cattle Egret (2), Yellow-throated
Scrubwren, Common Bronzewing, Peaceful Dove, Wonga Pigeon, Collared
Sparrowhawk. As usual, the Bell Miners are continuing breeding activity
into winter.
Barking Owls have been less frequently heard this winter, last heard
about 3 weeks back by family members.
