Bill,
Surely the reference was to Red Wine GUMS. Wonderful when savoured
under a setting sun after a hard days birding. And I have just found
a shop in Newcastle that sells the real, old fashioned English ones.
Yum.

Bird watching and appreciation is not a competition.
We need as many younger bird-watchers as possible!
When you've seen most of the non-vagrants, the real
joy comes from seeing 'old friends' better and learning
more about their behaviour and interactions with the
environment....the red wine in the Simpson Desert as the
sun sets over the squabbling Eyrean Grasswrens is
pretty good too.
As an aside , my youngest son , Jack who is still 11, tells
me that he has 591 Aust species on his list.....
Cheers,
Bill
