Hi Max
I don't know Carmel's Lagoon, even though I grew up in northwest NSW,
but have you tried using Google Maps? http://maps.google.com If you
can find it with that, switch to Satellite view - it's a fantastic
resource for birding, because it shows you what the terrain around an
area is like. It can also show you access roads, etc., and other
features you might miss from a main road.
There should be plenty of other places to see Yellow-billed Spoonbill.
It's the sort of bird that is often near farm dams and sometimes
riverbanks. If you are being driven to Coonabarrabran then you should
see plenty of good birds along the way - that's one of the good things
about being a younger birder - someone else is driving, so you can
focus all your attention on finding birds. You should see plenty of
birds of prey: it can be a real challenge working out what they are,
even for experienced birders, so don't worry about the ones you can't
ID for sure. You'll gradually build up an understanding of the "jizz"
of these birds - the characteristic ways they fly, soar, take off,
land, etc. That's one of the best things about birding - you never
stop learning!
Have a great trip, and make sure you do a trip report!
Cheers
Russell

Hi everyone.
Im going for a short stay to my Grandparents farm on the weekend.
There farm is situated about 20km NE of Coonabarrabran in central
NSW and I was wondering if anyone knows where Carmel Lagoon is? I
think it might be a bit further west past Baradine, its meant to be
good for Yellow-billed Spoonbill's, a new bird for me.
Max.
