A bit of technical trivia, as a side effect of how GPS works they
can give you time with extreme accuracy. I'm using little Garmin GPS
pucks which cost US$60. The specs say they give time (UTC) accurate to
within a microsecond (one millionth of a second) and my guess is that's
conservative.
I'm using them to electronically time-stamp bird calls so the location of
the calling bird can be determined from the time delay at several points.
I'll post a bit more about it when the project progresses.
But as you say the camera's clock will likely to be at least seconds
out and drift over time.
I've also used GPSBabel successfully to transfer transfer from/to my
handheld Garmin from/to Google Maps.
