Hi Peter,
Broad-billed Sandpiper is an extremely rare bird in NZ. There have been
about 10 individuals ever - though some might put that number as high as 20,
with several apparently returning birds over a few years.
The last record is, I think, one at Karaka in Jan - March 2003.
Who is interested? Well - me for one! But certainly
www.Miranda-shorebird.org.nz and the OSNZ Rare Birds Ctte at
http://osnz.org.nz/rarebirds.htm
If you are able, I'd appreciate a look at your photo.
There are quite a few NZ birders subscribed to Birding Aus, so if anyone on
this list is over here in NZ and sees something they think is out of the
ordinary it wouldn't be too silly to post it straight to Birding Aus as a
default - at least the news would get out fairly quickly then. Or phone
me.......
Cheers,
Sav Saville

Is anyone able to tell me the status of Broad-billed Sandpiper in New
Zealand?
I believe i saw this species at Miranda 2 weeks ago, but haven't confirmed
the sighting (I got 1 photo...just 1 before it took off).
Can anyone suggest a website or organisation that might wish to have this
sighting reported?
Cheers,
Peter
