Dear All,

In today's Sydney Morning Herald there is an interesting item headed "Tassie tiger or fox? Swipe its barcode and just end the argument" http://www.smh.com.au/news/science/tassie-tiger-or-fox-swipe-its- barcode-and-just-end-the-argument/2008/02/18/1203190740554.html It is about an international project called the "International Barcode for Life Project" the aim of producing a hand-held device that can quickly read a species DNA and provide an ID in a few minutes. According to the article there have already been 300 species of Australian birds coded for the database as well as 2000 species of Butterflies and moths and 700 species of fish from Australia. The first stage of the project aims to develop a library of %00,00 species.

Sounds like exciting stuff. I would be interested to hear comments from any genome jockeys ot there on the likely-hood of success. Particularly as the NSW Government has coughed to the tune of AUD 1.2 Meg.

Cheers,

Carl Clifford
