There is a juvenile gull new to Australia at the Cooktown wharf now.
Juvenile gulls can be a nightmare to ID so anyone seeing it get thousands of
pictures and if possible a feather for DNA analysis. It is a large gull.
Photos show short legs, not particularly heavy bill and wavy barring on back
which suggested Thayer's Gull to me. Chris Corben from the US says it does
not look like a Thayer's to him (head too large) and is sympathetic to the
nightmares the ID of this bird will cause!
