Anyone intending to visit the Sale Common should be aware that the main
boardwalk and small boardwalk to the riflebutt lookout were damaged by the
recent floods. Both are officially closed but it is possible to get across
the small boardwalk to the riflebutt lookout without getting your feet wet
if you're very careful.
The large boardwalk has had a catastrophic collapse but you can walk to
within a few metres of the damaged section, then retrace your steps.
The birdhide was not damaged by the floods but vandals have kicked out some
of the boards. From the lack of reaction of the nearby pelicans, swans,
cormorants and coots, the effectiveness of the hide hasn't suffered.
I had an excellent view from the riflebutt lookout of massed Little Black
Cormorants fishing together as well as the antics of large Pied Cormorants
extracting fish from a parent.
Regards
David
