Hi Arwen,
Jackass is (was) a common name for the Laughing Kookaburra. Never heard it used of Grey Butcherbird!

In case you didn't know, a jackass is apparently a Grey Butcherbird, and since we have what sounds like thousands around at the moment, the phrase was very apt yesterday!
