I stopped briefly at Mt St Joseph Pond this morning before work to look for
the crakes or at least see that the habitat was wrong, and managed to get
good views through my scope of a Baillon's Crake and a Spotless Crake.
Viewing is likely to only get better over the next few weeks, unless a
downpour happens again, so I'd say early morning is your best bet, and bring
a scope if you want to actually see the birds.

Regards,
Chris
