Hi all
I thought Stewart Island or King Shag at first too but i don't think
there's enough black on the face. (I was fortunate to see and
photograph them both a couple of months ago)
They have the black starting below or at the base of the bill with a
much thinner line of white under the chin than this bird appears to
have. Bill looks a little bit too long and thin too but this might be
a trick of the light so to speak.
Could it be an aberrant Pied Cormorant?
Does Mike know what it is?
Cheers

Hi All,
From the experience I've had with New Zealand shags this almost
looks to me like a non-breeding or immature King or Rough-faced
Shag. If so this would be an amazing record as this bird is
normally sedentary and population estimates I think are around 400
birds so this would be very rare.
There don't seem to be caruncles on this bird but in immatures or
non-breeders these are small and hard to see anyway. Did Barbara
get other pics?
I am not sure about aberrant plumaged Pieds. The pale bill wipes
out the possibility of a Black-faced to me.
Certainly an interesting bird. The shot is also great because it
allows an instant ID comparison with a Pied, Little Pied and Great
Cormorants around it.
Just my two bob's worth. Look forward to hearing about what others
might think it is. Inger Vandyke > From: >
