I have just spent the last week travelling from Canberra to Gold Coast and
Brisbane and back, both ways via Cowra, Coonabarabran, Armidale & Lismore. On
way north I was one of 3 in the car but a lot of travelling was at night. On
way south I was driving alone and only in the daytime. As both trips were done
to a tight schedule, neither trip gave much time or opportunity for birding.
Whilst not wanting to bore all with the details of what I didn't see, I don't
believe I have ever seen so few birds in my many times of doing the same trip
before. The one spot that was worth mentioning is Gum Swamp, Forbes (that I
would usually stop at) and this time spent 90 minutes at on 15-11-2007. Not
that there were any rarities, mainly a lot of the usual waterbirds. Another
that was fun to watch there was an young Peregrine Falcon that was obviously
just fledged, still a little unsteady at perching and flying. It perched on a
selection of dead trees in the swamp and being dive bombed by the
White-breasted Woodswallows. It was only about after 30 minutes of watching
this and other birds that I noticed an adult Peregrine Falcon perched a bit
lower on the same tree. (Its grey back hiding it against the grey dead tree).
The only other noteworthy things (and not even unexpected) was the flocks of
Superb Parrots near Cowra. Also a large collection (about 100) White-throated
Needletails near Gilgandra over the Newell Highway on 9-11-2007.
