Channel-billed Cuckoos were once a rare sight in Sydney. They have
become much more common in recent years. I now hear them several times
a week around Sydney's inner west. There was a CBC calling in our
street at dawn this morning - a call I wasn't familiar with - somewhat
reminiscent of a glossy-black cockatoo . CBCs occur well south of Sydney.
The southern limit is (or was) roughly Bega I believe.
I've just had 3 and a half days in Sydney. Driving south along Lane Cove
road Monday 12th and waiting to turn right to Gladesville, a pair of
Ch.Bills flew over closely pursued by Magpies, Magpie Larks, Noisy
Miners and Currawongs, midday. I then heard them again in Glebe at
around 1pm.
Then I heard them in Glebe, and Thursday morning at dawn when
overnighting in Cox's Road, East Ryde. Seem very common now in Sydney.
Also on Tuesday 13th when visiting the Sculpture by the Sea show -
Tamarama to Bondi and back - an Osprey flew over Tamarama beach at about
10.30am, very leisurely heading south.
