Val,
The 2004 Revised edition has some bird pellets illustrated, including
W-T Eagle. Unfortunately no scale is provided so one can compare the
sizes of the pellets. It may be worthwhile for your friend to pop
into the nearest large bookshop and have a quick look in "Tracks &
Scats" to see if any pellets illustrated ring a bell.

Thanks for the reply, Martin,
Barbara Trigg's book (at least in the copy I have) doesn't cover
bird's pellets. Hanzab only mentions the W-t E pellets to discuss
what remains were found in them, doesn't mention size or appearance.
I've done a bit of investigation into owl pellets myself and can
recognise them but the one my friend describes sounds far too large
to be any owl species.
She said it was about 8mm long and brown-furry on the outside but
'varnished' looking. I know the Sooty Owl has a varnished appearance
but 8mm is far too large for any Sooty that I know of.
