Nesting raptors
After checking out the peregrines at Dee Why Headland on Wednesday and
getting a few nice nice flybys of both birds I checked out the Narabeen
Ospreys, who didn't like the presence of an observer walking along the road,
leaving the nest and observing me from nearby trees, so I retreated to a
greater distance. No sight of any youngsters. Then to Warriewood where I
saw a Swamp Harrier with prey flying over the swamp and dropping down out of
sight, only to return to the air a few moments later and start hunting
again. Could be an indicator of breeding?
Alan / Bruce - has there been confirmed breeding in previous years?
In the rainforest area at Irrawong reserve, no Powerful Owl, but I was
startled (as was he/she) by a Brush Turkey chick appearing at my feet. Just
a fluffy ball mooching along the forest floor. Amazing what you come across
by walking silently.
Waders
Unusual observation at Manly Esplanade on Friday night - while waiting for
the Fairy Penguins to come ashore - a Bar Tailed Godwit on the beach at the
water's edge within metres of people's feet right next to the jetty.
Presumably an exhausted migrant just dropped in. I was able to tell the
volunteer warden how amazing it's migration was thanks to Ricki's Bird Note
updates.
