Peter,
Various ages show differences. The females hard to tell apart, but with the males, the Tree Sparrow has a distinct chestnut crown as opposed to grey on the house; also black throat, not a bib. That and the cheek-spot is what you need for certain i.d.'ing (if indeed, you ever were in doubt).
