Only three weeks ago i had a pair of Masked Lapwings nesting in the gutter
of a flat tin roof at the back of my house.
They sucessfully reared 4 chicks, which then stumbled over the tiles
pecking in imitation of there parents (probably at nothing, but just to
get the feeding action going).
After a day of the chicks being on the roof, they must have done a leap of
faith (about three metres) down to the ground. I know that one chick has
survived for sure (maybe more), but whether predators or the fall got the
others i'm not sure.
The nesting coinicided with my carport upgrade, where i was constantly on
the roof....yep...great fun being swooped by lapwings when trying to
balance on a thin beam!

Some 25 years ago I was working on the third floor of a building at Top
Ryde
(north-western suburbs of Sydney). My window overlooked an adjacent
building, the flat roof of which was covered in some sort of pebble/cement
mixture.
I noticed a pair of lapwings frequenting the roof, and eventually three
chicks appeared. I noticed them mainly because the parents were calling
them incessantly, apparently trying to get them off the roof and over the
coping (about 2 or 3 brick courses high) surrounding it.
When I realised what was going on, I managed to contact WIRES. In the
interim before they arrived, one of the little chicks made the leap onto
the
top of the coping, only to fall to its death on the concrete below.
WIRES were able to secure the other two chicks, and re-locate them (I'm
not
sure to where).
As a nesting place, certainly free from predators but it had other
disadvantages.
