Masked Lapwings nesting

Some 25 years ago I was working on the third floor of a building at Top Ryde
(north-western suburbs of Sydney). My window overlooked an adjacent
building, the flat roof of which was covered in some sort of pebble/cement
mixture.

I noticed a pair of lapwings frequenting the roof, and eventually three
chicks appeared. I noticed them mainly because the parents were calling
them incessantly, apparently trying to get them off the roof and over the
coping (about 2 or 3 brick courses high) surrounding it.

When I realised what was going on, I managed to contact WIRES. In the
interim before they arrived, one of the little chicks made the leap onto the
top of the coping, only to fall to its death on the concrete below.

WIRES were able to secure the other two chicks, and re-locate them (I'm not
sure to where).

As a nesting place, certainly free from predators but it had other
disadvantages.

Regards

Reid
